Kyrkja S

project type: Church hall extension location: Leikanger, Stadlandet, Norway size: 540 m² status: in application

This project holds particular significance due to the trust placed in the architect by the local community in Stadlandet to develop a new church hall in Leikanger. The project has been shaped through an open and collaborative process, with early and continuous involvement from local stakeholders, allowing multiple voices to influence the design from the beginning.

The intervention consists of a new, single-volume church hall, while the existing building is refurbished and reorganized to accommodate common meeting spaces and areas for children. The project focuses on the interplay between light, materiality, and geometry, using architectural form to reinforce both function and atmosphere.

Inside the main hall, daylight enters through a carefully positioned opening above the liturgical focal point. The ceiling geometry gradually slopes toward this position, emphasizing its significance while simultaneously serving a technical purpose, as the inclined ceiling conceals all installations within its construction. In this way, spatial expression and functionality are tightly integrated.

The exterior responds to the strong architectural identity of the building environment in Stadlandet. While slightly taller than its surroundings to mark its public and symbolic role, the volume remains restrained in form. A fully concrete construction gives the building a robust and long-lasting character, with a simple architectural language defined by a single, large opening on the front facade.
